First, to base ones view of self solely on how much attention one receives from others is not healthy. However, it is normal to seek recognition from others in the sense that we all desire to have a sense of belonging and connection. Second, and similar to the first, to base all our decisions merely on the expectations of others is not healthy. Nevertheless, the notion of cooperation, as well as community feeling/social interest (gemeinschaftsgefuhl), with our fellow human beings includes relational give and take; that is, we should consider the impact of our decisions for others in our relational world and not be solely motivated by self-interest.

Third, the notion of not intervening in problems is typically addressed to parents when siblings are having difficulties. To use never is not what Adler or Dreikurs stated. What they said is that we should give children every opportunity to work out problems for themselves. I believe this applies to adults as well. Leaders should give those they supervise every opportunity to work our problems. If the cannot work them out, or if one of the persons becomes aggressive, then a parent or a supervisor should intervene. In summary, we should give others the space to work out problems as often as possible (and we should do our best to work out our own problems) before intervening or seeking help from others. To say we should never intervene or never receive assistance goes well beyond the common sense of Adlerian psychology.

Hello. Im a Japanese business instructor and blogger.
Id like to ask you about your opinion on Japanese Adlerian trend, if you dont mind.
These years, a Japanese book on Individual psychology, Kirawareru Yuuki (means Courage to be Hated) has become million seller in Japan and other Asian nations.
I read the book and felt very odd, so I read Adlers original works and found many large gaps between the books.
I felt the book, Kirawareru Yuuki, induces a lot of misunderstandings about the individual psychology. It says "do not seek recognition from others," or "there is no need to fulfill others' expect," or "never intervene to others' problems and never let others intervene to your problems" as if they are Adlers thought. So I felt it odd and thought that Adler should not say such a matter.

Please tell me how you think about this situation. My friends are anxious that if it were in this way, Adlers teaching would be taken as a harmful to young people. Please give us a collect guidance.
